a) Job Specifications

Duties and responsibilities: -

1. Sampling of agricultural produce and plant material for pest infestation and disease infection analysis;
2. Analysis of agro-input, organic and inorganic trace contaminant in agricultural, microbiological and environmental samples or seed analysis or plant health and molecular biology analysis for safety and/or quality compliance;
3. Molecular analysis of plant materials, genetically modified organisms (GMO);
4. Preparation of reports and data analysis;
5. Preparation of laboratory standards and reagents;
6. Sampling, sample handling and preparation of media;
7. Analytical work and maintenance of reference collection for plant pests;
8. Implement and maintain Quality management system for good laboratory practice;
9. Maintenance and updating records in area of operation;
10. Seed health, purity, moisture, germination and viability testing;
11. Verification of calibration status of critical glassware and equipment.

b) Persons Specification

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have: -

1. Diploma in any of the following; Seed Technology, Laboratory Technology, Botany, Microbiology and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Applied Microbiology, Applied Biology, Applied Biological Science and Plant Nutritionist or any other releva
2. Meets the provisions of the Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya

1. Computer applications proficiency;
2. Data analysis;
3. Report writing skills;
4. Interpersonal relationship skills; and
5. Communication skills.

d) Competencies

1. Ability to work under pressure;
2. Ability to work independently and in a team;
3. Demonstrated results in work performance;
4. Knowledge of laboratory analysis using modern technologies;
5. Ability to identify plant varieties, seeds of different species, pests, diseases and weeds;
6. Knowledge of laboratory Quality Management system; and
7. Knowledge of equipment maintenance and calibration.
